Books Worth A Read -
From a Self-Proclaimed "Non-Reader"

I’m not even going to pretend that because I have a graduate degree that it means I’m well-read or smart or that I even remotely enjoy reading. In fact I think I am the complete opposite. I hate reading and I have the memory of a goldfish so I happen to think I come off as slightly more intelligent than said goldfish. Even writing these posts is more challenging than you can even imagine (or maybe not, maybe they sound incredibly daft and simple-minded).

Either way, I decided it was not only a good way to keep force myself to do things that I’ve been meaning to do for years, but also to share my thoughts (aka, what may be construed by some as “knowledge”) before it slips out of my memory.

So with that, I’ll be reading, and/or re-reading some of my psychology books that I think are worth reading and posting them here if they are good. If not, then they’re certainly not worth posting and I permit myself to forget them instantly.

As a Side Note:

Since being diagnosed with ASD, I’ve been on a bit of a kick, which makes sense, naturally so I think you might start to notice a bit of a theme going forward

I think Jennifer O’Toole does a wonderful job describing the bias in not only diagnosis, but also how ASD is viewed by clinicians and lay-people when it comes to ASD and gender. The book is Autism in Heels.

Classic Reads are:

Bessel Van Der Kolk’s The Body Keeps the Score

Deb Dana’s Polyvagal Exercises for Safety and Connection

Judith Herman’s Trauma and Rocovery

Irvin D. Yalom’s The Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy

Some Things on My Shelf that I’m excited to finally get to are:

Oliver Sacks’ The Man who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and Other Clinical Tales — How can you NOT want to read a book with a title like that?!

The Clinician’s Guide to Treatment and Management of Youth with Tourette Syndrome and Tic Disorders — I got this a year ago when I started working in a school where there was such a large population of students with Tourette’s and Tic Disorders!

Schema Therapy for Borderline Personality Disorder — Just interested in Schema Therapy in General

Cognitive Therapy for Challenging Problems — Curious to know how “challenging” their idea of “challenging” is.

Internal Family Systems by the Great Richard Schwartz

The Gift of Therapy by Irvin D. Yalom

The Stranger in the Mirror – Dissociation the Hidden Epidemic

Uniquely Human by Barry Prizant — Though I did start this initially and had some thoughts, so not promising.

Unmasking Autism by Devon Price — Same, I started this and had some opinions.
